The design criteria we use for our bars was gathered from various sources, including watching re-runs of the television show "Cheers". We also looked at all the different brands of Home Bars that you can buy commercially and we visit local taverns and pubs to get a feel of what features we would like included in our designs. We wanted our bars to look like these professionally built models that can cost upwards of $6000. The results of our research is a design that is easy to build, can be built at a fraction of the price and looks as good as any professionally built bar that that you could find in your local neighborhood tavern!

Before you put hammer to thumb, measure the space you have to work with and sketch out exactly what you want. A standard bar is 43 inches high and 42 inches deep; the length varies based on the size of your basement, den, or Satanic church. Allow at least four feet between the bar and the wall so even the portliest of bartenders (i.e., you) can work unencumbered. Finally, be realisticãno nudie video poker machines. We'll go with a basic eight-foot-long bar with shelves on one side and space for a kegerator on the other. If you want more than that, call Bob Vila.

Constructing, or buying your own home wet bar can be as detailed, and expensive as you would like. Though, you can also buy a home bar blueprint; then go down to your nearest wood supplier, buy some wood, and build a cheaper, yet surprisingly effective, home bar. That is, if you're somewhat proficient with a saw and a hammer, and not "Tim the Tool-Man."
